Image Transfer onto Fabric in 10 Minutes

I have always been reluctant to do image transfers onto fabric because of the long drying time. However, recently, I experimented with using my heat gun and got some really good results. Here are my steps for doing an image transfer onto fabric in just 10 minutes.

10 Minute Image Transfer onto Fabric

Here are the steps I follow:

  • Print a high contrast image using a laser or ink jet printer
  • Cut out image and move excess paper from edges
  • Place on non-stick surface, such as plastic or silicone
  • Apply thin layer of matt medium to front of image
  • Place fabric face down on the wet image
  • Gently but firmly smooth both sides with bone folder or fingers
  • Dry for several minutes with a heat gun
  • Soak in water for 3 minutes
  • Rub top layer off with finger
  • Take rag and remove paper from center outwards
  • When pieces getting smaller, dry with heat gun
  • Remove haze with magic eraser product

Hi! I’m Ali Manning

Years ago, I learned about handmade books, and ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I love creating new designs, learning about different techniques, and expanding my collection of paper. But what I love most about bookmaking is the community.

Through Vintage Page Designs and the Handmade Book Club, I’ve met thousands of other passionate bookmakers, mixed-media artists, and crafters. We all share a love of book arts and crafting, just for the joy of it.

I believe that bookbinding and book arts are for everyone, regardless of skill level or equipment. All you need is a little creativity and, of course, paper!

I couldn’t see where the attachments were shown. Where on Etsy was that printed fabric from? thx!

  2. Hi! I have tried this several times … when the image dries it still becomes fuzzy and does not resemble the results shown in the video. Was there a step forgotten or something in the video? This process does not appear to work.

  3. I had to rub really hard multiple times with the magic eraser…it damaged the photo in spots but that is ok. Finally got it!
