My name is Ali Manning, and I’m so glad you’re here. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for paper and books, and now I teach others the joy of making their own handmade books.
I create bindings that showcase the stitching and the handcrafted nature of books. I want the outside of my books to be as beautiful as the images and words on the inside.
My own mixed media books are inspired by the forests of New England and the gardens of my home country England. They are a journey of discovery – as you turn each page, you stumble upon a new scene as you would when walking along a garden path or woodland trail.
I’ve been blogging about paper crafts and book arts since 2007, and have taught hundreds of students how to express their creativity through paper. My work has been featured in online journals and industry magazines, including Somerset Studio and Cloth, Paper, Scissors. Read about my studio here.
I grew up in England but moved to the USA in 1996. I live in a yellow Victorian house (with a red front door) in Groton, Massachusetts with my husband Andy, daughter Hannah and black lab Daisy.
When I’m not making books, you’ll find me traveling to visit my family, who are scattered across the globe, going to flea markets, reading Victorian novels in the bathtub or hiking in the woods. I’m a sucker for coffee shops and have been known to like the odd gin and tonic 🙂
