April Journal Prompts

April is a month of quiet transformation. The earth is waking up, days are growing longer, and there’s a sense of new beginnings—not just in nature, but within ourselves.

This season is the perfect time to embrace fresh energy through creative journaling. These April journal prompts are designed to help you reflect on your personal growth, reconnect with the natural world, and celebrate the beauty in everyday life. We’ll look inward at the layers that shape us, step outside to reconnect with the natural world, and find poetry in the simplest of moments. We’ll also honor the energy of spring cleaning—clearing space both in our homes and in our hearts.

Whether you’re journaling in the sunshine, at your kitchen table, or wrapped in a cozy blanket, let these prompts help you slow down, reflect, and create with intention this spring.

Journaling Prompt 1: Reflecting on the Layers of Your Life

On a recent trip to Arizona, I found myself awestruck by the landscapes of Sedona and the Grand Canyon. The ancient rock formations, with their striking colors and intricate striations, seemed to whisper stories of time, pressure, and transformation.

We all carry our own layers, built from years of experience, creativity, challenge, and growth.

Take some time to reflect on your own inner layers.

  • What are the foundational layers that shaped who you are today?
  • What new layers have recently formed—perhaps through a shift in perspective, a creative risk, or a meaningful experience?
  • Are there any layers you’re still uncovering or beginning to understand in a new way?

How do these layers inform your creative work today? Journaling about this can be a powerful way to witness your own evolution—just like those canyon walls quietly bearing the marks of time.

Journaling Prompt 2: Earth Day & the Practice of Desert Bathing

While visiting the Sonoran Desert last month, I had the opportunity to go on a guided desert bathing hike—a twist on the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. Instead of walking for exercise or a destination, we slowed down and tuned in. We noticed the sound of the wind, the scent of creosote, the texture of cactus spines, the way light played across the hills.

I was especially moved by the presence of the towering saguaro cacti—ancient beings full of quiet wisdom.

This Earth Day, I invite you to try your own version of nature bathing. Find a natural space—a garden, a park, a forest trail, a sandy beach, or even a patch of green in the city—and take a slow, silent walk. Use your senses. What do you hear? Smell? Touch? See?

Afterward, open your journal and reflect:

  • What did you notice that you usually miss?
  • How did it feel to move through nature with intention, rather than purpose?
  • Did anything shift within you?

This is a simple but powerful way to reconnect—with the earth and with yourself.

Journaling Prompt 3: Celebrate National Poetry Month with a Haiku

Poetry invites us to slow down and notice—to find beauty in the ordinary and meaning in small moments.

This month, try capturing one of those moments with a haiku. Traditionally, haiku are three lines: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables. But more than the syllables, it’s about pausing to observe.

Here’s one I wrote one morning in a café:

Basil’s
Strawberry smoothie blends,
Tea cake toasts, tea spoons clink, sweet
Conversation brews.

Now it’s your turn. Choose a quiet moment in your day—mundane or magical—and turn it into a haiku. Focus on your senses. What do you hear? Smell? Taste? Feel?

Let it be small. Be real. Be Yours.

Journaling Prompt 4: Spring Cleaning for the Soul

Spring is a season of renewal—a time to open the windows, shake out the dust, and make space for what’s next. But spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying our homes—it can also be a powerful metaphor for our inner lives. As the season shifts, take a moment to consider what you’re ready to release and what you’re inviting in.

  • What physical clutter or unfinished projects are weighing you down?
  • Are there thought patterns, creative blocks, or outdated goals that no longer serve you?
  • What would it feel like to clear space for something new?

Let this be an intentional reset—one that makes room for fresh ideas, lighter energy, and renewed creativity.

These April journal prompts are gentle invitations to reflect, connect, and create. Whether you’re honoring your inner layers, celebrating nature on Earth Day, writing poetry, or clearing space for something new, I hope you find beauty and presence in each moment.

Here’s to a month of mindful writing, deep breaths, and quiet inspiration.

Happy journaling—and happy April!

  1. Late one night I was scrolling and came across a long list of quotations that you had posted, Ali. Now I can’t find them. Did you postsomething like that and can you tell me where to find them?

  2. I haven’t done any journaling in a long time but these prompts have inspired me to do just that. I love to write as it inspires my creative brain so I’m not sure why I just don’t take the time to journal. You’ve given me the inspiration I need! Thank you!
