Art Journaling with Rachelle Eason
In this Facebook Live, Ali chatted with artist Rachelle Eason.
Rachelle Eason’s Journey as a Professional Artist
Rachelle has always been involved in art, but her career has taken a winding path with many unexpected twists and turns. She has dabbled in professional scrapbooking, been a college professor, taught her own writing classes and opened a retail store. Rachelle has even worked with Disney!
The Power of Art Journaling
Art journaling has surged in popularity recently, but Rachelle has been art journaling for years. For her, art journaling is a connection between art and words. She guides her students through an art experience first before diving into the writing experience, but the priority is to help students overcome the barrier of the white page in front of them.
Rachelle encourages her students to go at their own pace, whether that means following her instructions step by step or drifting into their own world of art journaling. In addition to teaching the craft of art journaling, Rachelle also strives to bring cultural enrichment into her classes.
Plant Staining and Disney
Another one of Rachelle’s favorite forms of art is plant staining, which she threw herself into after she started homeschooling her kids. After spending time growing her craft and participating in shows, Rachelle was contacted by none other than Disney. She became an invited artist and did over 19 residencies with them—she even had her own shop for her plant stained art journals!
In her time at Disney, Rachelle put in 20-hour days to keep making art. It was hard work, but as she says, “When Disney calls, you don’t say no!”
What’s Next for Rachelle?
After recently resigning from her position as a college professor, Rachelle has decided to take advantage of the power of the internet and teach art journaling online. She’s focusing on writing, and her goal is to provide a writing experience.
Rachelle provides online courses and a writing lab to help students grow confident in expressing themselves through words.
Think Like a Book
Rachelle has kindly created a free taster to her online writing classes just for the Vintage Page Designs community! It’s a writing exercise called Think Like a Book, and it’s a foray into personification.
Class-takers will be encouraged to think like an actual book and write from its perspective. To try it out yourself, just click here!
Thank you so much to Rachelle for chatting with us about your journey as an artist and for providing us with such a wonderful and creative exercise.
