Cover Options for Handmade Books

Handmade books are a beautiful and personal way to express creativity, whether you’re a bookbinder, artist, or crafter. One of the most important aspects of a handmade book is its cover, which not only protects the pages but also enhances the overall aesthetic. Choosing the right cover material and style can transform a simple book into a treasured keepsake. Let’s explore some of the best cover options for handmade books.

1. Book Cloth

Book cloth is a durable and versatile material commonly used for handmade books with bookboard covers. Made from woven fabric—often cotton, linen, or rayon—coated with a backing (such as paper) to prevent glue from seeping through, book cloth provides a refined, professional finish. It is an excellent choice for bookbinding because it is flexible, strong, and available in a variety of colors and textures.

You can purchase pre-made book cloth or watch this tutorial for tips on how to create your own.

2. Paper Covers

Paper covers are a lightweight and versatile option. Handmade or decorative papers, such as marbled, mulberry, paste paper, or gelli prints, add unique textures and colors. Watercolor paper is a nice option, too. Its thick, absorbent nature makes it an excellent canvas for painting, adding ink, or mixed media applications. While paper covers are not as durable as other materials, they can be reinforced with cardstock, glued to bookboard, or protected with a layer of matte medium.

3. Fabric Covers

Fabric-covered books have a tactile, cozy feel. Cotton, linen, or repurposed textiles can be used for soft, flexible covers or reinforced with interfacing for added structure. These covers can be customized with embroidery, appliqué, or various printing techniques, making each book unique and personal.

4. Cork Fabric

Cork fabric is a unique and eco-friendly material that makes a fun and durable option for handmade book covers. It’s flexible, water-resistant, and has a smooth yet textured surface. Cork fabric is easy to cut, sew, and glue. You can purchase it with or without fabric backing but fabric backing is better for soft book covers. Its natural patterns and warm, earthy tones give books a distinctive, organic look, while its durability ensures long-lasting use. Lightweight yet sturdy, it is an excellent alternative to leather or traditional book cloth for those seeking a sustainable and contemporary aesthetic.

4. Kraft-tex®

Kraft-tex® is a durable, paper-based material that offers a unique blend of the flexibility of fabric and the strength of leather, making it an excellent cover choice—and one of my favorites! It comes in both washed and unwashed varieties, each offering distinct textures and creative possibilities. Kraft-tex® can be left plain for a minimalist aesthetic or customized with stitching, embossing, painting, or printing techniques. Whether used as-is for a sleek and modern look or washed for a vintage, well-loved appearance, Kraft-tex® is a versatile material that adapts beautifully to different bookbinding styles.

5. Canvas

Canvas is a durable and versatile material for book covers, offering a sturdy yet flexible surface that can be customized in countless ways. Its tightly woven texture provides a strong base for painting, printing, embroidery, or mixed media applications, making it a popular choice for artists’ journals, sketchbooks, and personalized notebooks. Canvas can be left raw for a rustic, natural look or primed with gesso for a smoother, paint-ready surface. Whether dyed, painted, or stitched, canvas book covers allow for endless creativity while ensuring long-lasting durability.

6. Leather Covers

For a classic and durable option, leather covers add sophistication and longevity to handmade books. Full-grain and top-grain leather develop a rich patina over time, adding character with use, while suede and embossed leathers provide unique textures and finishes. 7. Recycled & Upcycled Covers

Using repurposed materials like calendars, old book covers, vintage fabric, or even cereal boxes can give your handmade books an eco-friendly and one-of-a-kind charm. Upcycled covers often have a story to tell and can add character and uniqueness to your project.

Choosing the Right Cover for Your Book

When selecting a cover, consider:

  • Purpose: Will the book be handled frequently or serve as a display piece?
  • Durability: Does the cover need to withstand daily use?
  • Aesthetic: What style best suits your book’s theme?
  • Skill Level: Some materials require specialized tools or experience.

By choosing the right cover material, you can enhance both the function and beauty of your handmade books. Whether you prefer the softness of fabric, the elegance of leather, or the sustainability of upcycled materials, your choice will add a personal touch that makes each book truly special.

  1. Hello,
I’m having so much fun playing with paper and in the wee stages of book making.
My question is, is there a Book Club in Montana?
    Lori

    1. Hi Lori! So awesome to hear you’re getting into bookmaking! The Handmade Book Club is an online community, and we have members from all over the world! A bunch of our members meet up locally. I don’t believe there’s a regular group meeting in Montana yet, but we do have members from your state, so there could be potential for one!
