Creating Cuteness with Lindsay Ostrom
In a recent Facebook Live, Ali chatted with artist Lindsay Ostrom. Lindsay is an old-school lettering and doodling artist, author, and designer of products such as fabric, rubber stamps, stickers, washi tape, and papers. She loves to dabble in watercolor, bookmaking, and all kinds of crafts!
Creativity Throughout Lindsay’s Life
Lindsay grew up with creative parents who exposed her to photography, pop art, and other artistic pursuits throughout her childhood. This fostered her own love for creativity, which followed Lindsay into adulthood.
In her early 20s, Lindsay started an art shop but struggled to make it profitable. Then an idea sprouted: a rubber stamp convention (which still runs today). She held the convention in the parking lot of her shop and it was wildly successful! From that point, the shop continued to flourish, and Lindsay eventually sold it to one of the shop’s employees.
Facebook Group & Daily Creativity
More recently, Lindsay was taking care of her mom at a memory care facility when the pandemic hit. She was no longer allowed at the facility, and Lindsay says she “got in bed. And I gave up.”
What helped her overcome this tough time was something she had always done: crafting. Feeling inspired by other artists on YouTube and Facebook, Lindsay decided to start livestreaming her crafting sessions at 8 AM PST every weekday on Facebook. Over time, her community began to grow, each member providing connection and support to the others.
Lindsay does many types of crafting during her livestreams, and anyone is invited to join!
Besides the community, another benefit of this daily creativity is that Lindsay is pushed to try new things in her art journey.
Art Essentials
If someone were just starting out, Lindsay recommends these three essentials: a pencil with a good white eraser, a black pen, and a ream of white cardstock.
For color, Lindsay prefers watercolor or colored pencils (must be Prismacolor or Faber-Castell Polychromos). Her favorite color is green!
Lindsay’s final essential is a PC-1M white Posca paint pen.
Demo
In the video, Lindsay shares a project called the 12 Trees of Christmas that she’s been working on in her Facebook group. She also demos a page in the book!
Plans for the Future
Lindsay has a new book out called Color it Cute and will also be teaching for the Mixed Media Art Summit in February this year. She also has some projects with ADORNit and a new fabric line in the works!
Thanks so much to Lindsay for the lovely conversation. Don’t forget to check out her Facebook group and website!
