Simple Ways to Share Your Creativity This Season
Last week on the blog, we talked about the art of sending handmade pieces into the world — how a stitched spine or a folded page carries a little bit of your time, your attention, and your heart.
That idea has stayed with me all week.
Because once you start noticing how powerful it is to give something you’ve made, you also begin to see all the tiny places where your creativity can spill out into the world as small, unexpected acts of kindness.
A handmade book in a Little Free Library.
A collage card left on a café table.
A tiny tag tucked into a library book for a stranger to find.
These gestures don’t need fanfare or perfection — just the willingness to share a bit of your creative spirit with someone who might need a smile, a moment of delight, or a reminder that they’re not alone.
So today, in the spirit of the season, we’re exploring simple and meaningful random acts of creative kindness you can offer right where you are — no grand plans required.
1. Tuck a Handmade Book Into a Little Free Library
This one feels like magic every time.
A tiny stitched notebook, a folded zine, a gratitude booklet — slip one into a local Little Free Library and imagine the person who discovers it. Maybe they’ll use it as a journal. Perhaps they’ll give it to a child. Maybe it becomes the spark that nudges someone back toward making.

Ideas to include inside:
- Blank pages for their own notes
- Handwritten quotes
- A tiny pocket with a surprise collage
- A note that says “this book found you for a reason”
2. Leave Mini Art for Strangers
Small handmade pieces — collage cards, watercolor swatches, eco-print tags, paste paper snippets — make wonderful random art gifts.

Leave them on:
- café tables
- park benches
- community bulletin boards
- the windshield of someone who might need a lift
Add a gentle message like “For you. I hope it brightens your day.”
3. Send Happy Mail “Just Because”
Handwritten notes and handmade postcards are powerful acts of creative kindness.
Surprise someone with:
- a folded book structure
- a stitched bookmark
- scrap-journal pages
- small pieces of art that reminded you of them
This is especially meaningful during busy or difficult seasons.
4. Make Gratitude Bookmarks for Your Local Library

Bookmarks are simple, useful, and joyful to give away.
Create a batch using:
- Kraft-Tex scraps
- bookcloth offcuts
- watercolor washes paired with encouraging quotes
Ask your local librarian if you can leave them at the checkout desk.
5. Set Up a “Free Art” Basket at a Coffee Shop
A small basket labeled “Free handmade art—please take one!” encourages community members to slow down and savor something creative.
Fill it with:
- tiny stitched notebooks
- mini collages
- quote cards
- decorated tags

6. Gift a Handmade Journal to a Caregiver or Teacher
Caregivers, educators, and helpers spend the season giving so much of themselves.
A handmade journal is a heartfelt way to say thank you.
You might include:
- a personal note
- a reflection prompt
- a few decorative pages

7. Host a “Make & Donate” Gathering With Friends
Invite friends to gather for a simple creative afternoon. Make notebooks, cards, or bookmarks together and donate them to:
- senior centers
- shelters
- food pantries
- local schools
Handmade generosity expands beautifully when shared in community.
8. Leave Encouraging Notes in Public Spaces
Short messages tucked into unexpected places can make a huge difference. Write on handmade tags or paste paper scraps and leave them in:
- restroom mirrors
- changing rooms
- bus seats
- walking trails
Ideas for notes:
- “You’re doing great.”
- “Hope finds you today.”
- “One small step at a time.”
9. Give Away Your Creative “Happy Accidents”
Your imperfect experiments — the smudges, crooked stitches, and misprints — are full of charm and character.
Sharing them reminds others (and yourself!) that creativity doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.
10. Start a Seasonal Creative Kindness Ritual
Choose one act of handmade kindness to do every season or every December. You might:
- donate a gratitude journal
- create bookmarks for your library
- leave a bundle of mini collages in public spaces
- gift a stitched notebook to someone who inspired you
Small traditions create lasting ripples of generosity.
Why Creative Acts of Kindness Matter
We never know what someone else is carrying.
But handmade things have a way of warming the places words can’t always reach.
A stranger might tuck your little book into their coat pocket and carry it through a hard winter.
A child might start drawing in a tiny notebook you left behind.
Someone who thought they weren’t creative anymore might feel that spark return.
That is the quiet power of creative kindness.
A Gentle Invitation
As you move through this season of giving, consider leaving a trail of small creative surprises behind you. Something simple. Something handmade. Something from the heart.
Because the world always needs more kindness — and creatives like you are especially good at spreading it.

Hi! I’m Ali Manning
Years ago, I learned about handmade books, and ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I love creating new designs, learning about different techniques, and expanding my collection of paper. But what I love most about bookmaking is the community.
Through Vintage Page Designs and the Handmade Book Club, I’ve met thousands of other passionate bookmakers, mixed-media artists, and crafters. We all share a love of book arts and crafting, just for the joy of it.
I believe that bookbinding and book arts are for everyone, regardless of skill level or equipment. All you need is a little creativity and, of course, paper!
I loved this post. What great ideas! I especially like the idea of leaving handmade journals in little libraries. I love making them out of scraps so it would be a great way to share them. And I never thought of making bookmarks with Kraftex scraps! Thanks for sharing these ideas.
Thank you, Pauline! ❤️
Luved all you wrote….You are a very kind person to have written all those beautiful words. Your paragragh about ‘’Creative Acts of’’Kindness matter’’’
This one touched me and I wrote it in my 2026 planner…i will practise your suggestions year round..
Thank you for your kind words, Lise. I love that you’ve included the intention for 2026. Wishing you a wonderful New Year!
Ali, I just want to share this little story with you.
Our local bank has been collecting toys for Christmas to share with the children at one of the children’s hospitals near us.
There were so many toy cars, stuffed animals, figurines, etc., that maybe the older children might be happy with something
a bit more personal. After speaking with the bank manager, I decided to make simple handmade books for the older children.
The books were delivered to the bank this past Monday. Each set of books included one large five-hole pamphlet stitch book
and two small three-hole pamphlet stitch books all with the same covers. What a joy it was to create these books. And then
to come home to find this article sent out on the same day was humbling.
Thank you for the continued inspiration.
What a beautiful story, Donna! What a thoughtful gift for the older children. ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for this reminder… importance of kindness in our world. Blessing a stranger… but in sharing kindness, we in turn receive too – whether it’s healing or hope in the unfolding.
I am challenged to consider each month in 2026 – and choose a monthly theme.
Your kindness evident in the sharing of these words.
