For the final month of 2023, members of the Handmade Book Club were given not one but two book tutorials! The Equals and Peace Bindings used the same tools and supplies, but each project provided a different set of skills and challenge levels.
Here is the Equals Binding journal I created:

And here is the Peace Binding:

I really enjoyed the challenge of lettering the spine for the Peace book. Some club members really knocked it out of the park and created their very own words from the instructions that were provided!
Pro Tip
Before sewing your binding, practice stitching on a scrap piece of file folder or thin cardboard.

What did the Club Members say?
Thank you so much for the practice sewing. I glanced at it and then moved on. I managed to get the first two equals done and then was baffled. Then came Ali to the rescue. I went back and carefully studied the practice lesson and voila I knew what I was doing. You are amazing Ali. You know what we need even before we do🌿🌿🌿 – Joanne C.
What a great binding, Ali, thanks again for your clear, concise instructions! – Dorothy W.
Thank you Ali for your clear and patient instructions. This was such a fun and challenging binding. I was able to finish both books and love them both. Happy New Year and I look forward to my second year making books with the handmade book club! – Sheila D.
Yay! Finished both…Ali’s instruction was very clear. Thank you, Ali! – Janice R.

What is the Handmade Book Club?
The Handmade Book Club grew out of my love for teaching and community. Having spent more than 10 years teaching in-person classes, I decided to reach a wider audience in 2019 and founded the online Handmade Book Club.
The Handmade Book Club is a community of bookmakers from around the world. Each month, I teach a new book binding project to the club members. In addition to making books, we love learning about ways to fill our handmade journals. That’s why we have guest artists and speakers join us every month! Club members also have access to a robust selection of past projects within the archives.
Whether you’re an experienced bookmaker or a complete novice, the Handmade Book Club is a community for you. You can try out a free book project here.
We’d love to have you join us! Sign up for the waitlist!
Is there a way to purchase this lesson? I’d like to try the peace binding method but can’t seem to find a way to buy access to this.
