Essential Tips for Making an Accordion Book That Stands Out

The accordion or concertina book structures are some of my favorites! They allow you to display artwork, photographs, or even written content in a unique and creative way. While they’re easy to make, there are ways to make the process easier for a book that you’re thrilled to share.

Read on to learn my essential tips for making an accordion book that stands out!

Even Number of Panels

Always use an even number of panels. This ensures that the covers are in the correct position and the book opens and folds correctly.

Longer Pieces of Paper

If possible, start with a longer piece of paper than you need because scoring the paper to create folds will slightly increase the overall length of the book.

Tape Paper Together

If you don’t have long strips of paper, you can tape pieces together. Make sure the seams are neat to avoid disrupting the flow of your design.

Pro tip – use Nichiban tape; it’s strong and almost invisible.

Cover Considerations

  1. Flush Covers: When adding covers to your accordion book, ensure they are flush with the tail of the book. This helps the book stand upright when displayed.
  2. Hard or Soft Covers: You can use either hard or soft covers. Choose based on the look and feel you want to achieve.
  3. Independent or Cased-In Covers: Consider using two independent hard covers or casing in the accordion for a more finished appearance.

Tips for Scoring

  1. Start with a Square Sheet: Begin with a square sheet of paper for precise folds and symmetry.
  2. Use the Right Tools: A blunt knife, bone folder, or stylus works best for scoring. These tools create crisp, clean folds without tearing the paper.
  3. Maintain Perpendicularity: Use a quilting ruler or triangle to ensure that your scored lines are perfectly perpendicular to the head and tail of the book. This keeps your folds straight and uniform.
  4. Use Dividers: If you have dividers, use them to help space out your score lines evenly and accurately.
  5. Score Along the Grain: Always score the panels along the grain of the paper. This prevents cracking and ensures smoother folds.

By following these tips, you can create an accordion book that is not only functional but also beautiful to display!

HI! I’M ALI MANNING

Years ago, I learned about handmade books, and ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I love creating new designs, learning about different techniques, and expanding my collection of paper. But what I love most about bookmaking is the community.

Through Vintage Page Designs and the Handmade Book Club, I’ve met thousands of other passionate bookmakers, mixed-media artists, and crafters. We all share a love of book arts and crafting, just for the joy of it.

I believe that bookbinding and book arts are for everyone, regardless of skill level or equipment. All you need is a little creativity and, of course, paper!
