With Father’s Day approaching this month, I wanted to take a moment to share a few ideas about making handmade books for men. (Because men can enjoy a good journal too!) Whether it’s the materials you use, a color palette, finishings, or theme, there are plenty of ways to create a masculine-looking handcrafted book for the guy or guys in your life.

Cover and Signature Materials
One of the simplest ways to make a handmade book more masculine is with the type of material or fabric you use. You may want to consider their livelihood and/or hobbies to help you determine what to use for the cover.
- For the Professional: A sleek, leather-bound journal can be a sophisticated option, perfect for meetings, notes, and reflections. My favorite source for leather is Springfield Leather, although you can also create covers using sample pieces from a local furniture shop.

- For the Adventurer: A rugged journal with durable waxed canvas is ideal for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a reliable space to document adventures and experiences. Big Duck Canvas is a great source for this type of material.

- For the Creative: Artists, writers, and thinkers may appreciate the visual and tactile appeal of cork fabric. Sew Many Creations offers a beautiful selection of colors and designs.

Anyone who knows me knows my penchant for handmade paper, and it’s my personal belief that it makes the perfect signature option for a masculine book. Cave Paper is a source I love, offering one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted, naturally-dyed Belgian Flax sheets.

Theme
Incorporating a theme to reflect special hobbies or activities is another great way to personalize handmade journals for men. You can tie in a color palette, embellishments, ephemera, etc. to suit their tastes and interests. A few theme ideas to consider:
- Golfing
- Fishing
- Hunting/Archery
- Hiking
- Camping
- Boating
- Biking
- Sports teams
- Beer/bourbon tasting
- Travel
- Classic cars
- Music
- Culinary
Finishing Touches
There are plenty of finishing touches you can add to complete the look of your masculine book. You may want to incorporate wooden buttons, metal studs, leather cording, a vintage key, military dog tags, artwork, or specialty papers.

Handmade books are a perfect blend of artistry and utility, offering a personal touch that mass-produced items lack. For men who value quality, craftsmanship, and individuality, a handmade book is a wonderful gift choice for Father’s Day, an anniversary, a birthday, or any special occasion!

HI! I’M ALI MANNING
Years ago, I learned about handmade books, and ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I love creating new designs, learning about different techniques, and expanding my collection of paper. But what I love most about bookmaking is the community.
Through Vintage Page Designs and the Handmade Book Club, I’ve met thousands of other passionate bookmakers, mixed-media artists, and crafters. We all share a love of book arts and crafting, just for the joy of it.
I believe that bookbinding and book arts are for everyone, regardless of skill level or equipment. All you need is a little creativity and, of course, paper!
