Red Leather Artist Journal with Handmade Paper
I created several leather artist journals this weekend using some leather that I purchased from Pergamena last December. I paired it with some of my white and botanical handmade paper and make a four signature journal.
I punched the holes in the red leather with a Japanese hole punch and a 1/8″ bit, and used a waxed black linen thread to sew the signatures to the spine. The pattern is a Z design from Keith Smith’s Volume II Non-Adhesive Binding: 1,2 & 3 Section Sewings.
Here’s a close up of the lovely handmade paper inside that I loosely tore to form 8 page signatures.
I sewed a strap to the back of the journal that slots into the front cover as a closure.
I’ll post the others later this week.

Loved it! Question…how did you attach the strap firmly to the back cover?
Thanks!

Hi Glo,
I sewed it onto the back cover with a couple of stitches on the end. You could also put a little pva glue as well as the stitching if you were worried about security.
Hope that helps – don’t hesitate to ask any other questions you have!
