Do you remember the book, or perhaps the movie, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? I remember loving the idea of a traveling pair of pants that somehow fit perfectly on a group of friends, having been lovingly worn by each of them. That book served as inspiration for an exciting new collaboration between myself and three of my creative sisters: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Journal.
The Concept
Andrea Chebeleu, Minette Riordan, Roben-Marie Smith, and I have been friends and business besties across time and space for several years. We’re connected by a shared passion for making art and a collective commitment to growing our creative businesses. The common values of connection, community, creativity, and collaboration brought us together and keep us together.
We came up with this concept of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Journal(s) and we’re so excited to share this project! These handmade books revolve around the shared joy of journaling and creative storytelling among friends.
What makes this project unique is that we’ve each added an element of our own artistic expression to create four individual journals that will come back to us at the end.
How it Worked
- Andrea painted one side of 2 large sheets of paper and sent them off to Roben-Marie.
- Roben-Marie painted the other sides and sent them off to Ali.
- Ali turned the individual sheets into journals and sent them off to Minette.
- Minette added more paint and marks to the insides of the journal and then sent each person a journal.
As the journals travelled from one to the next, they become a tapestry of each sister’s unique contribution.
The anticipation was building as the books made their rounds! We all eagerly awaited the return of our traveling journals.
The Finale
Each of us now holds a treasured piece of diverse artistic expression, created by friends who contributed their personal touches and talent. We learned that this project not only celebrates the art of journaling but also strengthens the bonds of sisterhood.
