Most of my bookbinding teaching happens inside the Handmade Book Club, but I also love sharing free resources whenever I can. Making handmade journals has brought me so much joy over the years, and it feels good to pass that along.
I’ve been creating bookbinding videos on YouTube for a while now, and the collection has grown into something like a charcuterie board of creativity—offering a little bit of everything! Bookbinding Beginners
For those just dipping their toes into the world of making handmade books, these projects are a great place to start.
1. Pamphlet Stitch Journal
One of the best ways to use up scraps of material is to make a 3-hole pamphlet stitch journal! The pamphlet stitch is a simple stitch that can be dressed up by the materials you’re using

3. Washi Tape Journal
Who doesn’t love playing with washi tape? A community favorite, all you’ll need for this project is a file folder, some paper, and of course, washi tape!

These projects are great for even the youngest curious crafters! They’re also the perfect quick and easy thank-you gift for a friend, hostess, or teacher.
4. Brown Bag Journal
Make a brown bag mini book in just 30 minutes—using supplies you probably already have at home! It’s quick, fun, and totally beginner-friendly. It’s hard to stop with just one!

If you’re looking for a simple book structure that requires minimal materials (and time!), this envelope book tutorial might be the perfect fit. It can hold gift cards, notes, or any small bits of art.

This fun little project is a lovely way to highlight your favorite quotes, poems, or words that inspire you.

8. Little Link Coptic Journal

This project is a great way to practice two essential bookbinding stitches—the link stitch and the kettle stitch—while also giving new life to leftover materials.

The first binding I ever did with Ali’s instructions on Vintage Page Designs, before the HBC was a reality, is the Triple Chain Stitch and it is still one of my favorite bindings.
My Bible has hard covers, very heavy (I’m 73) . I’d like to remove it and put lighter one on. I’ve tried to use other ones. I love this one and keep coming back to it. Is this any thing you teach. Or do you know anything to help me . Thank you
