2019 Classes

Unless otherwise stated, classes will take place in my studio at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, MA.

Introduction to Altered Books

In this introductory one day class you will collage a small childrens book using vintage papers, ephemera, fabric and found objects. We will create pockets, mixed media tags and mini books. All materials and supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring some favorite quotes and any special items that you would like to include in your book. Class size is limited to four people. $99

Altered Book | Ali Manning

Little Leather Library

In this class we will create three little leather journals measuring 5″ x 3.5″. You will learn how to make the leather cover, how to create pages and three decorative stitches plus different closure types. Limited to 4 students. No bookmaking experience necessary but familiarity with hand sewing is useful. $99

Blue leather book

French Link Stitched Journal

In this workshop we’ll make a beautiful French Link Stitch journal with a botanical paper cover. Inside the thick, white handmade paper pages are great for writing, drawing and wet media. You’ll leave class with a great book plus the confidence to make more on your own. $49.99

Buttonhole Stitched Journal

In this half day class we will make a button hole stitched book with a handmade paper cover and satin ribbon closure. This is Mother’s Day weekend and would make a fun mother/daughter activity. Age 14+. $49.99

Handmade Sketchbooks June 1 & 2, 2019

Snow Farm, Williamsburg, MA
Explore the fundamental principles of creating your own handmade books using bookbinding tools and locally sourced botanical papers. Students will learn folded and sewn book structures, including Coptic and long stitch bindings. Leave with four finished sketchbooks and the skills to create more at home. All levels welcome.
