Accordion Concertina Journal Tutorial
In this latest project video I show you how to create a simple journal that will expand as you fill it with photographs and other memorabilia that is meaningful to you.
Supplies & Tools
6″ x 8″ paper for signatures x approx. 24
6″ x 8.5″ paper for signature wrappers x 3
6″ x 12.5″ paper for the accordion x 1
6″ x 4.25″ paper for covers x 2
1 yard of ribbon
Waxed linen thread
PVA glue
Glue brush
Sewing needle
Thin bookbinding awl
Punching cradle or thick magazine
Bonefolder

Interesting format and I liked the tutorial. But I am wondering how you determined the amount of slack in your ribbon on the spine edge. I know you just eyeballed it since you initially glued more of the ribbon and then changed the placement. Is there a rule of thumb you use?

Thank you for this tutorial. What weight of paper would you recommend for the accordion part?

It would depend what you plan to do with the book ie write on pages, watercolor on pages, glue photos etc. But I wouldn’t go any lighter than a 98lb mixed media paper like this one: https://www.dickblick.com/products/canson-xl-mix-media-pads/
